medi began around the end of the 19th century in Voigtland, Germany producing hosiery and corsetry. In the 1920s Albert Weihermüller and his son-in-law Berthold Voigtmann expanded the business to incorporate elasticated knitted goods. This was the first step into healthcare.
After 1945, Pausa, the town in which the company had its head office, was within the Soviet occupied East Germany. With no prospects for entrepreneurs it was decided to move to the west. With difficulty their irreplaceable machinery was brought to Bayreuth, Germany and a new company was founded.
In the summer of 1951 the manufacture of medical elastic knitted components and elastic stockings began in Bayreuth. Both of the founders, Wolfgang Weihermüller and Günther Voigtmann, regarded innovative production techniques as the focal point of their company philosophy. Their aim was the implementation of new ideas and technical improvements to provide increased comfort in wear and medical efficacy of their products on an ongoing basis. A philosophy still maintained today.
